PTA Happenings for 4/16/2017

THIS WEEK AT LUM:

SCIENCE FAIR:  Our Lum Scientists are heading to their labs!  The Science Fair will be held on Friday April 28, 6-7:30 pm in the MPR. Students participating must turn-in their projects on Monday, April 24.  Visit http://sciencefair.lumpta.com to view the schedule and learn more about the steps in the Science Fair program. The Science Fair Committee has developed a great timeline to help students to work on their projects over time, to avoid “cramming” right before the fair!  Projects are due on Monday April 24.

SPRING FLING CARNIVAL & RAFFLE:  Save the date for Lum’s 3rd annual Spring Fling Carnival — Saturday, May 6, 11 am-3 pm. Join us for the fun — games and prizes, music, food, and raffle drawing.  Spring Fling Raffle tickets are now available for purchase. Grand prize: $500 pre-paid Visa card! 2nd prize:  4 Disneyland Park Hopper tickets!  And much more.  Tickets cost $5 each, 5 tickets for only $20, 15 for $50, or 40 for $100. Don’t miss your chance to win some exciting prizes while supporting our school. Purchase tickets online at www.LumPTA.com, with the Wednesday envelope flyer, or email Kelly@LumPTA.com.  We need your help to make it another successful and fun event – volunteer at our SignUpGenius page.  See you at Carnival!!

AEF SALUTE TO EDUCATION:  Alameda Education Foundation recognizes outstanding innovative programs and hard working volunteers at their spring gala, Salute to Education.  This year, Mary Otieku and Sarah Greenberg will be recognized for creating a flexible learning environment for students who need to move or stand as they learn. (Lum’s program is one of two that gets a shout out in an upcoming Alameda Journal article.)  The Foundation, also, wishes to recognize volunteers, Danielle Zorn and Hyunji Lee for chairing the art docent program. Salute to Education, Alameda’s premier event celebrating our public schools, is Friday, April 21, 2017 from 6 – 9 at Rhythmix Cultural Works, 2513 Blanding Ave, Alameda.  Tickets are available at alamedaeducation.org    And check out AEF’s raffles, including four 1-Day Park Hoppers for Disneyland and California Adventure.

FIRE UP YOUR FEET:  Let’s get active Lum Bears!  Fire Up Your Feet is a great national program that encourages families to maintain healthy lifestyles with physical activity.  From April 15-May 15, all Lum students, staff, and their families (parents, grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles) can register ANY and ALL physical activity at www.fireupyourfeet.org, and Lum will be in the running for a $5,000 award!!  In the past year, Lum was awarded nearly $3000 through this program!  Think of all the possiblities–walking/biking to and from school, exercise classes, the gym, afterschool activities for the kids, sports teams, and so much more!  Email Kelly@LumPTA.com for more info. Volunteers will be tracking our students’ activity during school hours (recess, PE, etc) but all activity outside of school can be tracked by YOU!

EARTH DAY & HANDS ACROSS ALAMEDA:  On Earth Day, April 22, celebrate our wonderful planet with a beach clean-up 8:30-10 am.  To participate in the Beach Cleanup please visit: www.ebparks.org/about/getinvolved/volunteer/events  Then join hands with our fellow Alamedans for HANDS ACROSS ALAMEDA at 10 am.  This is a NOT a political event, it is a CommUNITY event . It is intended to bring all walks of life and faiths together. It is simply a celebration of life and unity.  Check the website for meet-up locations.  After Hands Across Alameda, ARPD will kick off the Earth Day Event at Washington Park with games, exhibits, and activities for kids/families, petting zoo, jumpers, and more.

2017-2018 PTA board members and committee chairpersons are needed. If you would like to get more involved, email Kelly@LumPTA.com to find out more. PTA is a friendly, fun group of Lum parents, grandparents, friends and staff committed to supporting our students. Get to know fellow Lum families, give back to a vibrant community, and have your voice heard!
